The house didn’t exist. All that was left of 225 Elliot Street, Milton, Massachusetts, was a black, burned-out shell. The roof had caved in over the kitchen, where the bomb had gone off, and the entire wall was missing. Most of the walls on either side of it were half the height they used to be, and their formerly comfortingly uniform color had been charred to an ugly, crumbling black finely dusted with gray ash from the fire that had started. The roof over these rooms, as well, drooped down like an old hat pulled down to protect your face from rain.
